SOTARO FUKAISHI
Born in Japan, Sotaro Fukaishi studied at Kunitachi College of Music where he received the Yatabe Prize and graduated as the best student of his year. He first came to international attention when he won second prize in the International Tuba-Euphonium Conference Competition held by the University of Texas in 1986. He was the first Japanese brass player ever to win a major international prize, and the event marked the beginning of his career as a leading soloist. This was followed by winning third prize in the 2nd Leonard Falcone International Competition.
In 1988 he made a recording with the Tokyo Symphonic Wind Orchestra which was released by Toshiba EMI (Japan). A year later, he won second prize in Japan's biggest wind and percussion competition.
Besides having a busy international career as a soloist, conductor and teacher, Sotaro has performed with the finest Japanese wind band, 'Tokyo Kosei Wind Orchestra'. As a soloist, he gave the first euphonium recital ever to be performed in Greece, as part of the Ionian Summer Music Academy 2006.
During the last few years Sotaro has released three CDs, 'Ave Maria' , 'Memory' and 'The Art of Euphonium' on the Doyen label. He is also the editor of several collections of music, such as Euphonium and Fantastic Duet, published by the Yamaha Corporation.
Sotaro has served on the jury for numerous competitions, and as the chairman of the committee for the National Brass Band Championships of Japan in 2005. Since 1988 he has also been the director of the Japan Euphonium Tuba Association. Currently he is a lecturer at Senzoku Gakuen College of Music and conductor at several music colleges and universities. He studied the Euphonium with Toru Miura and Brian Bowman.
